One of the biggest challenges I experienced on my wellbeing journey, and that I see in my clients, is feeling an unhealthy obligation towards your employer. People are programmed to say YES, to please, to help, to be a "good girl/boy", so in many cases people do things for their employer that their inner being is screaming out for them not to do it, doing overtime when you don't want to, swapping your rest days at short notice and constantly being on-call 24/7 are simple but powerful examples. This isn't being trapped by your job, or your boss, this is you being trapped by you, by your inability to say NO!
Prioritising yourself can feel overwhelming. On one hand, there's the desire to give, and on the other, there's the need to recharge. Both elements are essential for a fulfilling life, but too much of one can lead to burnout.
Start by establishing healthy boundaries in your life. It is essential to recognise that saying "no" from time to time is not a selfish act but rather a necessity for maintaining your well-being. For instance, if you commit to volunteering every Saturday and then feel drained as a result, it might be time to reassess and adjust your schedule to better suit your needs. By scaling back to volunteering once a month, you create more space for self-care and rejuvenation. Taking this time for yourself not only allows you to recharge and refocus but also equips you with the energy and mental clarity needed to support others more effectively when you do choose to volunteer.
